The Department of Health was established under the Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Act, 1946. It became operational in 1947. The Department was renamed the Department of Health and Children in 1997. It reverted to being named the Department of Health in 2011.
The Central Midwives Board was established in 1918 and continued until the Midwives Act 1944.
The Consultative Cancer Council was established in 1948, ceased in 1949.
The Consultative Council on Hepatitis C was established in 1996 and is still active.
The Disability Appeals Office was established in 2007 under the Disability Act 2005.
The General Nursing Council was established in 1919 and merged with the Central Midwives Board to form An Bord Altranais in 1951 under the Nurses Act of 1950.
The Health Repayment Scheme Appeals Office was established in 2006.
The Hospitals Commission was established in 1933 under the Public Hospitals Act and its functions were transferred to the Eastern Health Board in 1976.
The National Breast Screening Board was established in 1998 and was replaced by the National Breast Screening Board In its second incarnation, it was reconfigured to work with the HSE in 2005.
The National Health Council was established under the Health Act 1947 and lasted till 1996.
The National Health Insurance Commission was established in 1911 and replaced in 1933.
The National Hospital Trustees was established in 1933 and replaced by The Hospital Trust Boards under the Public Hospitals (Amendment) Act.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland was established in 1875 and replaced by a new Pharmaceutical Society in 2007.
The Therapeutic Substances Advisory Committee was established in 1933 under the Therapeutic Substances Act and replaced in 1993 under the Animal Remedies Act.
Bord Altranais was established under the Nurses Act 1950 and is still active.
The Blood Transfusion Services Board was established in 1965 and is still active.
Comhairle na nOspidéal was established in 1972 and replaced by the National Hospital’s Office of the HSE in 2005.
Crisis Pregnancy Agency was established in 2001, S.I. 446/2001 and absorbed into the HSE in 2010
The Dental Board was established under the Dentists Act 1928 and was replaced by the Dental Council under the Dentists Act 1995.
The Drug Treatment Centre Board was established in 1988.
The Dublin Dental Hospital Board was established in 1963 by a Statutory Instrument
The Eastern Regional Health Authority was established in 2000 under 1999 Act and merged with the HSE in 2005.
The General Medical Services (Payments) Board was established in 1972 S.I. 184-1972. It became part of the HSE on 1 January 2005.
The Health and Social Care Professionals Council was established under 2005 Act in 2007 active.
Health Boards Executive established under the Health (Eastern Regional Authority)and under the Health Act 2004 and merged into the HSE in 2005.
The Health Education Bureau was formed in 1975 and ceased in 1987.
The Health Information and Quality Authority was established under the Health Act 2007 active.
The Health Insurance Authority was established in 2001 under the Health Insurance Act.
The Health Research Board was established in 1986 S.I. 452/1986 and is still active.
The Health Service Employers Agency was established in 1996 and absorbed into the HSE in 2005.
The Health Service Executive was established on 1 January 2005 and absorbed the existing Regional Health Boards and Eastern Regional Health Authority and a number of other agencies.
The Hospitals Joint Service Board was established in 1965 and was privatised in 1990.
The Hospitals Trust Board was established in 1938 and was wound up in 2009.
The Irish Health Services Accreditation Board was established in 2002 and dissolved into the Health Information and Quality Authority in 2007.
The Irish Red Cross Society was established by Red Cross Act 1938.
The Irish Board of Safety Association was formed in 1971 and merged into the National Safety Council in 1987.
Medical Council was incorporated in 1979 under the Medical Practitioners Act 1978. It was reconstituted under the Medical Practitioners Act 2007. The Medical Registration Council was established in 1927 and replaced by the Medical Council in 1979.
The Research Council of Ireland was dissolved in October 1986 and was merged into the Medical Research Board which merged in 1986 to form the Health Research Board. The Medical Social Research Board established in 1965 also merged with the Medical Research Council of Ireland in 1986 to form the Medical Research Board.
The Mental Health Commission was established in 2002 under the Mental Health Act 2001.
The National Breast Screening Board was established in 2005 and replaced by the National Cancer Screening Services Board in 2006.
The National Cancer Registry was established in 1991. The National Cancer Screening Services Limited was established in 2007 and was formerly known as the National Breast Screening Board, established in 2004 as a statutory Corporation. In 2010 its assets were transferred to the HSE.
The National Community Development Agency was established in 1982 and replaced by the National Social Services Board in 1984. The National Social Services Board in its second incarnation was established in 1984 and replaced by Comhairle in 2000.
The National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1999 S.I. 376/1999.
The National Council on Aging and Older People was established in 1997 and it succeeded the National Council for the Elderly 1990 to 1997 and the National Council for the Aged 1981 to 1990. It was dissolved on 1 September 2009 under the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.
The National Disability Authority was established under the National Disability Authority Act 1999 in 2000.
The National Drugs Advisory Board was established in 1966 and replaced by the Irish Medicines Board in 1996.
That National Haemophiliac Council was established by S.I. 451 2004 in 2004 .
The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board was established by S.I 246 of 2007
The National Rehabilitation Board was formed in 2000 and replaced the National Organisation for Rehabilitation. In 2000 it as dissolved and absorbed into Comhairle Eastern Regional Health Authority, FAS and the National Disability Authority.
The National Social Work Qualifications Board was established in 1997.
The National Treatment Purchase Fund was established in 2002 as a statutory body.
The Opticians Board was established under the Opticians Act 1956 .
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (“mark 2”) replaced the previous entity of that name established in 1875.
The Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board was established under the Medical Practitioners Act 1978 and replaced the former non-statutory Council for postgraduate medical and dental education. It was absorbed into the HSE in 2009.
The Pre-Emergency Hospital Care Council replaced the National Ambulance Advisory Council in 2000 and is still active.
The Social Workers Registration Board was established under S.I. 278 2010 under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act
The Special Residential Services Board was established in 2003 and in 2007 it became The Children Acts Advisory Board.
The Veterinary Council of Ireland was established in 1931 under the Veterinary Surgeon Act 1930/31?. It was dissolved in 2006 and replaced by the Veterinary Council of Ireland under the Veterinary Practice Act.
The Voluntary Health Insurance Board was established under the 1957 Act.
The Woman’s Health Council was established in 1997 and was subsumed into the Department of Health in 2009.
The Agency for Personal Services Overseas was established in 1974 and was merged into the government’s Development Corporation Office Ireland.
The Dublin Rheumatism Clinic Association was formed in 1942 and was wound up in 1978.
The Irish Council for Bioethics was established in 2002 by the Royal Academy, a company limited by guarantee.
The Irish Expert Body on Fluorides and Health was established in 2004.
The National Advisory Committee on Drugs was established in 2000.
The National Children’s Advisory Council was established in 2001.
The National Council for the Aged was established in 1981 and replaced by the National Council for the Elderly in 1990. The National Council for the Elderly was replaced by the National Council on Aging and Older People in 1997.
The National Treatment Purchase Fund was established in 2002.
The National Validation Body on Social Work Qualifications and Training was established in 1994 and continued until 1997. The Social Services Inspectorate was administered by Department of Health and was established on a statutory basis as an Office of the Inspector of Social Services within the HIQA.
Eastern Health Shared Services was established in 2000 and merged into the HSE in 2005.
The Hospital Bodies Administrative Bureau was established in 1973 and merged into the HSE in 2005.
The National Disease Surveillance Centre was established in 1998. It name was changed to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and merged into the HSE in 2005.
The Office for Health Management was established in 1997 and merged into the HSE in 2005.
The Institute of Public Health in Ireland was established in 1999.
The Irish Council for Bioethics was established in 2002 by the Royal Irish Academy.
The Medical Research Council of Ireland was established in 1937 and merged with the Medical Research Board into the Health Research Board in 1986.
The National Blood Transfusion Association was established in 1948 and replaced by the Blood Transfusion Service Board in 1965.
The National Organisation of Rehabilitation was replaced by the National Rehabilitation Board in 1967 formed in 1955.
The Health Insurance Authority is responsible for evaluating and analysing the Risk Equalisation Scheme and for the operation of Health Insurance Act and to regulate health insurance business and health insurance development generally.
The Irish Medicines Board is responsible for protecting public and animal health, the regulation of human and veterinary medical products. It regulates clinical trial. It is now the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA)
The Mental Health Commission is a statutory body established under Mental Health Act 2001. It prepares and reviews codes of practice for those working in mental health services. It promotes the establishment and maintenance of high standards of delivery of mental health services and the interests of persons detained under the legislation.
The Pre-Emergency Care Council S.I. 109/2000 is responsible for standards, accreditation and education in the field of pre-hospital emergency care. It protects the public by independently specifying, reviewing, maintaining and monitoring standards of excellence for the safe provision of quality pre-hospital emergency care”
Bord Altranais regulates th enursing profession under the Nurses Act 1950 and 1985. It maintains a Register of Nurses, provides for education and training and investigates misconduct.
The Dental Council is the regulatory body for the dental profession. It maintains the Register of Dentists, maintains standards for dental education and investigates malpractice. It makes schemes in conjunction with the Department for Categories of Ancillary Dental Workers.
The Medical Council regulates the medical profession. It ensures the quality of medical training and postgraduate training for specialists. It registers doctors. It undertakes disciplinary sanctions and investigates alleged breaches of discipline. It gives guidance on professional conduct and ethical conduct.
The Opticians Council Board operates under the Opticians Act 1956 and registers opticians. It oversees the training and registration of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. Its responsibilities include the control of practice.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland regulates pharmacists and pharmacies. It has functions in relation to education and training, registration, maintenance of registers. It registers dispensing chemists and druggists, registered druggists and assistant. It enforces regulations in relation to control, supply of medicines.
