It is divided into eight divisions covering Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>It provides health protection services, advocates, contributes to health and participates in health service development.\u00a0 Each section of the department is led by the Director of Public Health, who is the regional Medical Officer of Health.<\/p>\n<p>The Medical Officer of Health is responsible for investigating notifiable diseases and outbreaks under the Health Acts and the Infectious Disease Regulations.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Environmental_Safety\"><\/span>Environmental Safety<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Health Protection Services cover programmes for the safety of air quality by working with the \u00a0Environmental Protection Agency, the Radiological Institute of Ireland, Met Eireann, Bord Gais and other institutions.\u00a0 It works with Environmental Health Officers and the Environmental Protection Agency in relation to water services and the quality of drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>Multidisciplinary groups in the departments include a range of specialists, including consultants in public health medicine, senior medical officers, specialist nurses, surveillance scientists, researchers, and project specialists.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health_Strategy\"><\/span>Health Strategy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Department of Public Health implements Healthy Ireland, a framework for improved health and living published in 2013.\u00a0 Its actions include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>prevention of infections and endemics<\/li>\n<li>protection from biological, chemical and radio nuclear health risks<\/li>\n<li>response to incidents and disasters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It reaches out to link high-risk and hard-to-reach people with needed services.\u00a0 It conducts research into new innovative solutions.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notifiable_Diseases\"><\/span>Notifiable Diseases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are obligations requiring various parties, such as medical practitioners and others in the Health Services to notify medical officers of health of certain infectious diseases.\u00a0 The Medical Officer of Health investigates the diseases and seeks to control the risks associated with the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Notifiable infectious diseases are notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.\u00a0Certain classes of diseases must be notified, including They contribute to the prevention of major emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>The Public Health Divisions and the Public Health Service Protection Surveillance Centre seek to provide early detection of risks. \u00a0This includes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reactions to notifiable diseases<\/li>\n<li>assessing ng information on regional outbreaks<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0surveillance of various sources,<\/li>\n<li>enhanced surveillance of \u00a0particular risks involved<\/li>\n<li>liaison with colleagues in veterinary, marine, agricultural, environmental and other agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health_Improvement\"><\/span>Health Improvement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The groups contribute to health improvement by<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>surveillance and monitoring of diseases,<\/li>\n<li>advocating for decision-makers to carry out changes to make healthier choices,<\/li>\n<li>health impact assessment of policies, programs and projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Public Health groups are involved in<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>child safety awareness program,<\/li>\n<li>global health,<\/li>\n<li>sexual health,<\/li>\n<li>congenital anomaly registers in Ireland<\/li>\n<li>initiatives on obesity and overweight.<\/li>\n<li>Public Health is involved in the assessment of needs and health status. It provides expert advice and service planning, promotion and reconfiguration.\u00a0 It contributed to national clinical programmes and the national cancer control programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Public Health laboratory is located in Dublin and supports the diagnosis, prevention and control of infectious diseases and foodborne illnesses.
