The Cross-Border Health Directive for persons entitled to public treatment in Ireland applies from 2011.\u00a0 The Directive seeks to give persons entitled to public patient healthcare the right to seek healthcare in other EU states, subject to procedures and conditions.<\/p>\n
It allows for patients resident in Ireland and availing of public health services to be referred for health care publicly funded by another EU state.\u00a0 Under the Directive, reimbursement is allowed at the cost of healthcare abroad or the identified cost in Ireland.<\/p>\n
There must be a referral by a GP, hospital consultant or, in some cases, by an HSE professional.\u00a0 The referral must state the required healthcare, give details of the hospital location, and provide evidence as to qualification and suitability. The funding may be reimbursed in accordance with reimbursement rates.<\/p>\n
An application form must be made for assessment by the HSE.\u00a0 It is submitted to the CBD office.\u00a0 Service involving an overnight or longer stay requires prior authorisation.<\/p>\n\n
