The UN has a role in settling international disputes peacefully in accordance with its Charter.\u00a0 The Security Council is given a key function in this regard.<\/p>\n
The Council may make recommendations with a view to the settlement of any dispute at party\u2019s request.\u00a0 It may investigate disputes or threatening situations.\u00a0 It has, power in relation to disputes, whose continuation might jeopardize international peace and security.<\/p>\n
A party should first seek to resolve matters by negotiation or other peaceful means of their choice. \u00a0They are to make every effort to achieve a peaceful settlement of local disputes. \u00a0However, the Security Council may recommend appropriate procedures at any time.<\/p>\n
The Security Council has the power to impose sanctions as a means of coercive means to resolve disputes and situations which might lead to a breach of international peace.<\/p>\n\n
