Animal By-Products (ABP) are entire bodies or parts of animals or products of animal origin not intended for human consumption. The disposal of ABP is highly regulated in order to protect both human and animal health. The main legal requirements are set out in Regulation (EC) No. 1069\/2009, its implementing Regulation (EU) No. 142\/2011 and the European Union (Animal By-Products) Regulations 2014 (S.I. No. 187\/2014).<\/p>\n
Under this Regulation approval must be sought from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for most operations dealing with ABP. These activities include operating;
\n\u2022 Rendering plants;
\n\u2022 Compost plants;
\n\u2022 Biogas plants;
\n\u2022 Knackeries;
\n\u2022 Pet food plants;
\n\u2022 Wool and hide stores;
\n\u2022 Intermediate plants;
\n\u2022 Meat and bonemeal (MBM) stores;
\n\u2022 Collection centres;
\n\u2022 Transporting ABP;
\n\u2022 Feeding meat from fallen animals to hounds or fur animals.<\/p>\n\n
