<\/span><\/h3>\nA number of the canals constructed in the 18th<\/sup> and 19th<\/sup> centuries are derelict.\u00a0 Some have been or are being restored.\u00a0 At present, the navigable canals are the<\/p>\n\n- Grand Canal,<\/li>\n
- Royal Canal,<\/li>\n
- Shannon and Erne Waterways,<\/li>\n
- Erne System<\/li>\n
- Barrow Navigation<\/li>\n
- Lower Bann Navigation<\/li>\n
- \u00a0Jamestown Canal,<\/li>\n
- Tralee Ship Canal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>Transfer to OPW<\/span><\/h3>\nThe Canals Act 1986 provided for the transfer of the Grand Canal and Royal Canal from CIE to the Commissioners of Public Works.\u00a0 Also transferred are all other waterways of the canal undertaking of CIE.\u00a0 The Commissioners of Public Works were empowered to exercise all powers, privileges, and liabilities of the Board of CIE that arose before that date.\u00a0 The staff were transferred from CIE to the OPW.<\/p>\n
It became the general duty of the OPW to undertake the care, management, and maintenance of the canal and canal property as a public community for use by the public for navigation in such parts of the canals as were open to navigation from time to time or fishing.\u00a0 They could provide for the enjoyment and recreation of the public.\u00a0 The Commissioners were empowered to designate parts of the canal property for particular incidental purposes.<\/p>\n
The Commissioners are obliged to consult with the Department of Fisheries in relation to any matters which could affect fish life in the canal.<\/p>\n
