Irish banking evolved from the late 1960s from a\u00a0 position of passive membership of the sterling area.\u00a0 Employment in \u00a0banking increased three-fold from the 1960s and 1980s.<\/p>\n
The distinctions between clearing, merchant and industrial banking activities decreased.\u00a0 The management of the retail corporate treasury and overseas \u00a0sections became more integrated.<\/p>\n
Competition increased \u00a0in the Irish banks in the 1980. They became increasingly involved in other financial services. They became more involved in managing pension funds, charities and private client’s wealth. They began managing collective investments and unit trust.\u00a0 They established assurance subsidiaries and began marketing insurance products as agents.\u00a0Irish banks became involved more internationally and some established a presence abroad.<\/p>\n\n
