How To Use
Step 1: Register
You must Register and accept our Terms and Conditions in order to use the Library. If you are not subscribed, click on the Register Now link or the Subscribe tab in the top right corner. There are four subscription options which you may select.
We offer each user a free one off seven-day trial subscription. There is no cost and credit card information is not required. No further trial is available to a user, other than at our discretion, pursuant to a request to subscriptions@legalguide.ie.
We offer standard 3-month and 12-month subscriptions through Stripe for individuals, small firms and micro companies. We offer subscriptions for larger firms and companies based on their size and use.We will allocate a number of usernames for larger scale users on request.
Step 2: Free Trial Users Must Activate Subscription
After first registering, a free trial user must activate his /her registration / free subscription by clicking on the link in the email sent to his/her username /e-mail address, in order to use the service. The user need only activate his/ her account once. The free subscription commences immediately.
Step 3: Log In
You can log in at any time by clicking on the “Login” tab.The “Login” tab is in the top right corner of the screen, just below the top navigation bar on conventional desktops, laptops and smart devices. Where your screen size is more than 100%, it may be obscured by the top navigation bar so that you may need to make your page size smaller or pull the page down in order to see and click on the “Login” tab.
You must enter your username and password each time you log in.You must complete the “Captcha” test to confirm that you are not a robot.This will involve ticking the box or completion of one or more “human” tests.
You will be logged out after a period of non-use. You may log out by clicking on the “Logout” tab at any time. You may be logged in on one computer, device or phone at a time. Larger users may request further usernames to allow multi-user access.
Step 4: Go to Library
You can go to the Library by clicking on the “Go to Library” link in the middle of the page (which appears when the user is logged in). Alternatively, you may click on the Library tab on the right side of the top navigation bar. The top navigation bar may be accessed through the drop-down menu in the top right corner of i-pads, tablets and smartphones.
The Library Index is on the left-hand side of the page on the conventional desktop, laptop and on most “landscape” i-pad and tablet views.The library text will appear in the middle of the page when you open an article.
On i-pads, tablets and smartphone portrait view, the Library Index will usually appear on the top part of the page and the library text will appear at the end of the page.
Step 5: Browse the Library and Open a Chapter
When closed, the Library Index will show the major category headings. Click on the “+” symbol in the category heading in order to open the lower branches of the Library Index tree. This will open the first level showing the major areas within that category.
Click on the “+” symbol in the chosen area in order to open the lower branches of the Library Index tree. In almost all cases, this will show a list of chapters/articles in that area. In some cases, you need to go down one more level to the find the articles. In this case, click once again on the relevant “+” symbol to reach the list of chapters
Click on the chapter name/title and you will land on the index page for that chapter. Each chapter contains the library text. Most chapters also contain extensive legal materials, usually the relevant statutes or case law in italics
Step 6: Browse a Chapter
You will land on the Chapter Index. This is a list of the pages in the Chapter. Each page name (in green) on the list is linked to that page.
You will see the words/links “Chapter Index” and “Legal Materials” on the right side of the screen on desktops and laptops, and on some i-pad, tablet and smartphone views). On most i-pad, tablets and smartphones views, these tabs are fixed on the top of the screen.
You can click on any page and go directly to that page. The chapters are intended to be read as a whole in their page order. You can read the chapter by clicking on the first page in the Chapter Index and then clicking on the “Next Page” tab for each successive page. The “Previous Page” tab allows you to go back one page. The “Chapter Index” will allow you to return to the list of chapter pages at any time. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” tab appear with the “Chapter Index” and “Legal Materials” tabs when you open an article or Legal Materials content.
Step 7: Browse the Legal Materials.
Most chapters contain extensive legal materials, usually the relevant statutes, case law or guidance relevant to that chapter. The material is in italics and is the original legislation, case law or guidance.
When you are in a Chapter, you can click on “Legal Materials” on the right side menu on desktops and laptops. On most i-pads, tablets, and smartphones, the menu is fixed to the top of the page.
The “Legal Materials” tab brings you to the Index of Legal Materials for that chapter. The major headings in the list are in black and the individual pages are in green and are linked to that page.The page may be a section of an Act, a part of an Act, a case, official guidance or other legal material. Some pages, especially cases, are very long and you can navigate down with the scrollbar. You can return to the top of the page and the indexes using the Up Arrow which appears in the bottom right corner of long pages on most web browsers
You can return to the Chapter Index or the Legal Material Index at any time by clicking on those links on the right side (or at the top). You can go to any other chapter, subject area or category at any time by clicking on the Library Tree index at any time.
Searching Irish Legal Guide
You can search Irish Legal Guide by inserting your search term into the Search bar.You need not be logged in. This search will identify the number of times that the search term appears in that Chapter.
The searched term may be in the Library text or the Legal Materials. The search will enable you to identify the chapters which are relevant to your enquiry. Some search result will appear with a “0” count at the bottom of the search ranking. This indicates the presence of the searched for term in an ancillary part of the chapter.
